The Shalom Hartman Institute campus, established in the 1990s as a pluralistic Jewish education and research center, serves researchers who are leaders in their respective fields, students and guests from Israel and overseas. It was designed as a Jerusalem complex whose scale blends in with its surroundings. The buildings on the campus are organized around the beit midrash (rabbinical seminary) and an array of diverse inner courtyards that underscore the connection between the indoors and the outdoors, while creating interplays of light and shadow.

Since 2020, the GSNA architecture firm has been involved in the development and expansion of the Institute, achieved through a total design, additions and modifications to the existing buildings, as well as the design of a new building on campus. The design is an extension of the original architectural language, but has also been adapted to the changing needs of the Institute. The new building will complete the symmetrical format chosen in the original design and reinforce the continuum of the buildings, the courtyards and the passageways.

The tour will focus on the unique architecture of the campus and the contemporary interpretation that it offers to local Jerusalem architecture: the manner in which the stone, the topography and the climate shape the buildings and the courtyards, the links between the built spaces and the open spaces, and the local, green and sustainable design principles.

The 90-minute tour will be led by the architect, Galit Shifman-Nathan.
