91 The Renewal the Billy Rose Art Garden

This iconic art garden was designed by the sculptor Isamu Noguchi for the Museum’s opening in 1965, and is considered one of the artist’s most important and ambitious works. The garden, which extends across an area of roughly five acres, is an environmental landscape sculpture that integrates nature and art into a unique experience, which to this very day continues to be one of the Museum’s main attractions.

The hourlong tours will be led by the landscape architects Leor Lovinger and Uri Torton from Studio Urbanof, who were in charge of the garden renewal project. They will be accompanied by Sivan Eran-Levian, the garden’s curator on behalf of the Museum. They will begin with a brief review of Noguchi’s original vision of creating an oasis – a space to pause and contemplate, which blends matter and spirit, east and west, past, present, and future.

Participants will then take a circular tour along the garden’s paths, with a focus on the current upgrade works carried out there. They will hear about the challenges posed by the project, coupled with the architectural solutions that were implemented, which include accessibility and safety arrangements, the adaptation of the lighting systems and furniture, and a comprehensive renewal of the vegetation. All this was achieved while preserving Noguchi’s spirit and original vision.
