98 The Renewal of the Moussaieff Residences Compound

Meeting point: Lunts St. (near Jaffa Rd.), at the entrance to the site

Project architect: Rosenshine Architects; Restoration architect: Moshe Shapira Architects. A construction project in progress

Professional tours that will unveil the complex works that are underway at the active Grand Hotel construction site. The compound was built at the end of the 19th century by Yosef Moussaieff – a brother of Shlomo Moussaieff, who was one of the heads of the Bukharan community in Jerusalem and a founder of the Bukharan neighborhood. The original compound consisted of three buildings and a yard.

Yosef Moussaieff’s family lived in one of the buildings, another one served as a synagogue, and the third was a bank named Kupat Am. During the 90-minute tours, members of the design team and the project manager will point out the original and the contemporary construction technologies that have been implemented in the compound. They will also talk about the restoration of the buildings and the synagogue (including a reconstruction of the Holy Ark), the infrastructure and reinforcement works now being carried out at the site, and the future plans.
