43 The Maaleh Film School Expansion

20 Shivtei Israel St.

Architects: ET Architecture, a project in the planning stages

Come and get acquainted with this old building that currently houses the Maaleh Film School and with the plans for its expansion. The blueprint aims to enlarge the unassuming stone structure, which was built in the early 20th century and was also used by David Ben-Gurion at the beginning of his public career. Apart from the expansion, the building will also be restored and converted into a university campus dedicated to film studies.

The proposed design was inspired by an archaeological mound (tel) with multiple strata, with each stratum representing a different layer of time and content: the subterranean stratum carved in rock will be an auditorium where films are shown and international festivals and conferences are held; the stratum of the old building is directly above it, and it will include a library, archive, cafeteria, and gallery open to the public; the third stratum will be used by the academic faculty; the top stratum will be for the students’ use and include a large common area with a curtain wall that faces east towards the Old City, and west towards the New City.

The project is being advanced by Eden – The Jerusalem Economic Development Company.
