77 The Renewed Herodian Quarter
Tours of one of the most fascinating residential compounds in ancient Jerusalem – an upscale neighborhood where the city’s affluent Jewish residents (apparently priests) lived in the days of the Second Temple. The neighborhood, which extends across an area of 2,600 m2, features stately homes, unique mosaics, streets and ritual baths. Uncovered during archaeological excavations conducted after the Six Day War, the site was turned into an underground museum. Following extensive renovations that lasted about two years, it was recently reopened. As part of those renovations, remains of buildings were reconstructed and mosaics were repaired. State-of-the-art lighting and audio systems were also installed, which together recreate an experience of how life was in Jerusalem in the Second Temple period.
The tours will be led by Nitzan Refael from Studio Nitzan, who were in charge of designing the project, as well as staff members from The Company for the Reconstruction and Development of the Jewish Quarter.
