76 The Mansion and Courtyards of the Bukharan Quarter
Amos Oz, Shai Agnon and many other authors described this ‘mansion’ in their books – namely Yehudayoff House, an impressive two-story building designed like a 16th century Italian villa. It was also known as the Messiah’s Palace. At the time of its construction, it was the most elegant home in Jerusalem.
Led by the tour guide Aharon Paz, these tours will recount the story behind the ‘mansion’ – including biographical details about the wealthy Bukharan merchant who built it, the Turkish military headquarters that operated of it, and the school for ultra-Orthodox girls that it currently houses. The 90-minute tours will also pass by other buildings in the neighborhood, in addition to the refurbished market.
