118 An Apartment in a Landmark Building
Original structure architect: unknown, 1938; Renovation architect: Shaya Roth Architects, 2024
A modernist apartment building dating back to the British Mandate period, which was built by George Alousi. Its design reflects the spirit of the age, typified by a mix of International Style elements with local construction traditions. The building is characterized by clean-line geometry devoid of any decorations, with rounded corners, delicately processed stonework, and terrazzo flooring. The interior design of the apartments features a central living space (liwan) commonly found in Arab architecture.
During these tours with the architect Shaya Roth, he will point out the architectural qualities of the building and of the apartment in it which he designed. The design preserved the modernist spirit of the building, while also adapting the layout to the young family who lives there today.
