14 My Fair Baka - South
A tour of the Baka neighborhood, which was established at the end of the 19th century for Greek Orthodox Arab and Armenian families, who prior to that had lived in the Old City. Baka flourished and developed during the British Mandate period, when homes typical of traditional architecture and the International Style were constructed. In the 1950s, Jewish families settled in the neighborhood and many synagogues and tenements were built there. While passing by Baka’s stately homes and towering trees, as well as its blooming gardens, the tour will focus on the neighborhood’s history, its construction styles and its residents. Participants will be shown a yard at one of the homes that boasts of art collections and antiques, while also becoming familiar with diverse works of art that are concealed between the homes and the yards: stained glass, ceramics and icons of lions.
Led by the Jerusalem tour guide Efrat Assaf, the tour will center on the section of Baka located between Derech Beit Lechem and Park HaMesila (Train Track Park).
