36 The Food Rescuers’ House
Visits at the hub of the Food Rescuers operation, which will include a discussion about the aims of the center and tours of the wholesale produce market, from which restaurants, green grocers, institutions, and business establishments in the city get their fruits and vegetables.
The tours will trace the Jerusalem food chain – the trucks, the grocery stores, the compressors, and the thousands of crates of produce from Israel and around the world that make their way to the market – while putting a spotlight on the people behind our food supply.
The operating model of Food Rescuers in Jerusalem will also be described. Its elements include: bringing the market onboard as a partner in rescuing the food, advancing the vision of turning the market into a zero-waste system, implementing community distribution models throughout the city, and optimizing the municipal food system – and how all of this pertains to the city, to food resilience, to community work, and to the climate crisis.
Parking inside the wholesale market compound is based on availability (at a cost of NIS 20). Alternatively, visitors can choose ‘blue and white’ paid parking on the streets outside the market.
