Sessions with Michal Krieger Motolla, an artist, group facilitator and photographer, who researches homes and living environments and delivers lectures on the history of places of residence. In her exhibition entitled Purple Root (2022), she showcased a multidisciplinary documentary installation in which the gallery space traces her parents’ home and its different rooms. This was achieved through original items from the home, sculptural objects made out of everyday items, and photographs and documents from the family archive. The exhibition was a creative manifestation of a separation and observation process at her childhood home, the memories associated with it, and Israeli components of identity prevalent in the period from the 1960s to 1980s.

The sessions will start with a brief lecture about the history of places of residence after humans transitioned from living in caves to their current living arrangements. The lecture relies on facts, assumptions and anecdotes, accompanied by spectacular photographs and illustrations. They provide an anthropological and sociological glimpse of the lives of human beings in the past and present.

During the second part of the sessions, Krieger Motolla will present the documentation project dealing with her parents’ home, which she undertook after their death. Participants will be invited to engage in a guided discussion about their own childhood homes.
