78 The Hurva Synagogue
Restoration architect: Nahum Meltzer, 2010; a project managed by the Company for the Reconstruction and Development of the Jewish Quarter
Tours at the Hurva Synagogue, which is located in the heart of the Jewish Quarter in the Old City. It is considered the most elegant synagogue in Jerusalem. The current structure, which was dedicated in 2010, is a near-exact and splendid replica of the synagogue that stood on this site in the 19th century and was destroyed during the War of Independence. Among other things, tour participants will be shown the ancient archaeological findings unearthed below ground, as well as the majestic prayer hall that was built according to original architectural blueprints that were found in archives in Istanbul. The hourlong tours will end with a 360° panoramic view from the synagogue’s domed terrace – which is the highest point in the Jewish Quarter and overlooks the entire city of Jerusalem.
The tours at 11:00 will be led by the synagogue’s restoration architect, Nahum Meltzer.
Participation in the tours is contingent on wearing modest clothing.
