041 A Yard House

9 Yemin Moshe St. (across from the Touro restaurant).

Architect: Sophie Casper, 2022.

A visit at this beautiful residence that exemplifies a modern intervention in a historical building. It originally consisted of two small homes typical of the Yemin Moshe neighborhood, which was founded at the end of the 19th century on land that Moses Montefiore purchased for building a Jewish neighborhood outside the Old City walls. There was a cistern under the yard that was used by the people who lived in the vicinity. When designing the new house, the original structures were preserved. They were joined by a stairwell that connects them, as well as the yard that became a kind of covered patio that is used to entertain guests. During the tours, participants will also see how modern technologies can be integrated into very old buildings.
