30 Maria’s Hostel for Women (Marianskya Feodorovna)

An open museum and guided tours at one of the most impressive sites in the city, which will focus on restoration and architecture. Originally built as a hostel for women pilgrims from Russia who were visiting the Holy Land, during the British Mandate period it was converted into a prison where members of the Jewish underground movements – Haganah, Etzel and Lehi – were incarcerated alongside Arabs and Jews convicted of nonpolitical crimes. It currently serves as a museum dedicated to the struggle of the underground movements and their contribution to establishing the State of Israel. It features an extensive reconstruction of the Mandate period prison, including the inmates’ cells, the workshops, the synagogue, the solitary confinement block, and the gallows.

The 90-minute tours will be led by Yoram Tamir, the museum director.

The tours will be held inside the museum and also outdoors in the Russian Compound. Participants are advised to wear a hat and comfortable walking shoes.
