33 Art in the Public Space

Two tours with the linguist Smadar Barak, who researches art in the public space. The tours will put a spotlight on works of art located in the public space in the Kiryat HaYovel neighborhood – some visible to the eye and others concealed from view. During the tours, Barak will explain why the former mayor of Jerusalem, Teddy Kollek, decided in the 1970s to install works of art throughout the city, in general, and at schools, in particular. The focus will be on two of them: the red sculpture by Alexander Calder, and paintings by Avraham Ofek at Agron Elementary School – coupled with other works of art, including sculptures of animals made of concrete in the yard of a home, frescoes on a street and in a synagogue, mosaics, and concrete and metal reliefs.

The tours will conclude with a visit at Smadar Barak’s home, where participants will be introduced to her collections.
