068 Architecture at the Israel Museum

Meeting place: the entrance to the museum, 11 Ruppin Blvd., Museum District

What makes a building interesting and smart? How did the museum’s architects deal with its construction challenges in the 1960’s and adapt it to the activities carried out there around 50 years later? These tours led by Nira Ben Ezra, a senior guide at the Israel Museum’s Guided Tours Department, which will focus on the architecture of the largest and most important museum in the country, which consists of iconic buildings designed by a number of different architects. During the hourlong tours, Ben Ezra will describe the original blueprints made by Al Mansfeld and Dora Gad, which shaped the museum’s modernist and modular character. She will also talk about its renovation at the beginning of this millennium by the architects James Carpenter, Efrat-Kowalksy and Asaf Lerman, a renovation that led to a reorganization of its wings.

The tour is not wheelchair accessible.
